Todays sermon is titled “Unconditional Forgiveness” and is by Fr. Kenn Katona+ here at Saint Clement’s Episcopal Church!

We continue in a never-ending crescendo of violence and suffering… This is because no matter the extent of the punishment, it never feels like the people who hurt us can suffer enough… So, the cycle of violence escalates… Which then causes others to up their ante… Again… And again… And again… A never-ending cycle where the stakes of violence, retribution, and revenge get higher, and higher, and higher… and still, our terms of justice are never satisfied…

But then… Then Jesus came… Jesus came and not only made a way for us to be forgiven, but tells us that as we are forgiven, we must forgive… Because Jesus knows that there is no freedom in revenge… Jesus knows there is no freedom in retribution… Jesus knows there is no real freedom in an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth…

And this is all because we remain trapped in our feelings of being wronged, and we are left in a loop of continuous suffering, granting memories of what we did, or what was done to us power over the way we live our lives… Granting memories power over our very well being… Allowing memories to torture us day, after day, after day… This my dear friends in Christ is no way to live… Yet, Jesus still calls us… Jesus still calls us into forgiveness again, and again, and again… Both for the sake of others, and for our sake as well…
